SCBA polls today, tough competition expected

The annual presidential elections of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) will be held on Thursday with a tough competition expected among the candidates.

Asma Jahangir group has been winning the SCBA presidential election for the past five years This year the group has nominated Barrister Syed Ali Zafar who has full support of the Asma Jahangir group as well as other leading lawyer groups.

Syed Ali Zafar is the son of former federal minister and one of the preeminent lawyers in the country, S M Zafar.

On the other hand, Hamid Khan group has fielded Pir Kaleem Khurshid for the top slot. The candidate is a professional lawyer and is a member of the Punjab Bar Council. He has previously been president of the Lahore High Court Bar and also has the backing of several leading lawyer groups.

For the secretary’s slot, renowned lawyer Aftab Bajwa from Asma Jhangeer group and Manzoor Butt from Hamid Khan group are in a stiff competition.

As many as 24 candidates are reportedly contesting in the SCBA polls whereas the total number of voters stands at 2,697.
