The Lahore High Court on Thursday stayed the construction of Canal Cricket Stadium in Faisalabad.
Justice Ibad Ur Rehman Lodhi passed the orders on a petition filed by Qaisar Mushtaq challenging the construction of the stadium on the land, which was leased out, to him.
During the hearing, the petitioner’s counsel arguing before the court submitted that the stadium was being constructed on a piece of land which was located at Canal Road Faisalabad, he said the 10-Acre land was leased out to him in 1988 but the district administration cancelled the lease illegally and started the construction of the stadium on it.
He pleaded the court to issue directions for restoration of his lease.
Faisalabad District Coordination Officer Noor ul Amin Mengal along with cricketer Saeed Ajmal appeared before the court after being summoned. He apprised the court that the lease was cancelled, as legal formalities were not fulfilled for the purpose, besides the imposition of a fine. He said that the land could not be allotted to the former lessee as per Apex Court verdicts.
He said a MoU had been signed with the Saeed Ajmal Cricket Academy, which would provide training to the teenagers at the stadium. However, the court stayed the construction and sought further arguments from both parties while adjourning the hearing until November 17.
