Karachiites take to streets against water shortage

Residents including women and children on Saturday staged a protest against non-availability of water and power in Karachi’s Golimar area.

The citizens took to the streets and blocked the road by holding placards inscribing slogans against the local administration. The protesters raised their voice for the restoration of water and electricity. They said that the defective drinking water supply lines should be made functional.

Earlier, senior Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) leader had claimed that an artificial crisis had been created while water was being distributed on political basis in the metropolis.

The protestors told the media that they have been deprived of basic facilities including water and power for eight months whereas no action has been taken by the officials to resolve the matters.

Police and Rangers personnel were called in to disperse the people however, after about three hours, the water-starved locals called off protest on the assurance of early solution to the problem.

The demonstrators further warned of again staging protest if provincial government fails to prepare any strategy regarding this chronic issue.
