Next wars in subcontinent will be fought over water, says Rabbani

India is denying Pakistan its water rights by building dams on rivers that provide Pakistan water, in violation of international water agreements and accords, according to Senate Chairman Raza Rabbani.

Rabbani was speaking as chief guest at the 14th International symposium on Advanced Materials (ISAM – 2014) at National Centre for Physics at Quaid-e-Azam University. He said that the Government of Pakistan should raise this issue at international forums and take measures to address this injustice, which will definitely lead to a war like situation. Future wars in the subcontinent, and even other parts of world, will be fought around the water issue.

He further said that the west clearly discriminates between India and Pakistan, especially USA. He pointed out that the US has entered into a civil – nuclear agreement with India but denied the same to Pakistan.  He made it clear to the international community that Pakistan is a responsible country and its national leadership across the board is more rational and sane as compared to their Indian counterparts. Therefore, the US may also enter into such agreements with Pakistan.

The Senate chairman highlighted that the scope of technology was unlimited, and has led to a significant increase in the range and depth of research and development in the industrially advanced world.  He said that science is the key to success in the modern-day world.

Symposium Chairman Ejaz Ahmed Mukhtar emphasised on the role of advanced materials, saying that materials play a key role in the economic growth and development of any country, which is why humanity has always measured its progress in terms of the availability of new materials.
