At least 13 killed as rockslide hits Karachi slums

At least 13 people died as a rockslide hit shanties in Karachi’s Gulistan-i-Jauhar area early Tuesday, local media reported.

According to rescue services, seven children and three women were among the thirteen bodies dug out from the rubble. The dead belonged to the southern Punjab, said the local residents.

According to reports, the landslide occurred at 2 AM. It buried three shanties located on a plot in Block 1 of Gulsitan-e-Jauhar area. Most of the people living in the shanties were asleep when the incident happened.

Rescue teams along with Rangers arrived at the site and recovered about eight bodies, rescue officials said.  “At least six people are still trapped under the debris.” rescue officials added.

Rangers’ personnel also took part in the rescue effort that continued for hours till morning.

The rescue operation suffered a long delay, as the heavy machinery from the concerned departments arrived at least two and half hours after the incident.
