Director-General Ministry of Climate Change, Muhammad Irfan Tariq, has been elected as vice chair of Working Group-I of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).
“This is a great milestone the country has achieved. Indeed, the election of Irfan Tariq has brought a global recognition of Pakistan’s efforts in the global fight against climate change and the country’s extreme vulnerability to the negative impacts of global warming,” commented Arif Ahmed Khan, Secretary Climate Change Ministry.
The IPCC’s Working Group-I titled Physical Science Basis assesses the physical scientific aspects of the climate system and climate change.
Other candidates of the same group elected during the recent IPCC election include Valerie Masson-Delmotte as Co-Chair (France), Panmao Zhai as Co-Chair (China), Edvin Aldrian as Vice-Chair (Indonesia), Fatima Driouech as Vice-Chair (Morocco), Gregory Flato as Vice-Chair (Canada), Jan Fuglestvedt as Vice-Chair (Norway), Carolina Vera as Vice-Chair (Argentina) and Noureddine Yassaa as Vice-Chair (Algeria).
The election took place in Dubrovnik, Croatia, where the IPCC held its 42nd Session.
