Former president and Pakistan People’s Party Co-Chairman Asif Ali Zardari has condemned the targeted assassination of PPP candidate Malik Muhammad Aslam Channa.

Channa was running for the chairmanship of the Union Council and membership of the district council in the Dibalpur Tehsil of Okara on Friday.

The cold blooded, targeted and pre-meditated murder of the PPP candidate and workers on the eve of the by-elections raises serious questions. As local bodies’ polls draw near the incident has given birth to legitimate questions about who is behind these murders, he said in a statement, adding, “the Party demands a transparent and thorough probe into the murders and also wants the cockpits apprehend and brought to justice at the earliest.”

Asif Zardari said that Channa was a die-hard Party activist, known for his fearlessness, personal integrity and commitment; he enjoyed popularity in his area across the board. As party president of the Provincial Constituency 188, Malik Aslam had rendered great services to mobilise the workers on the one hand and expose the corruption and wrongdoing of the government in power.

There are also suspicions that the un-nerved government wanted to send a tough message to political opponents as it unsuccessfully did last year by killing over a dozen political workers in Model Town Lahore. These suspicions must be addressed, he said.
