Govt set to enhance agri exports to Russia: minister

The Senate was told on Friday that the government is making all out efforts to enhance exports of Pakistani agricultural products to the Russian federation.

Minister for Commerce Khurram Dastgir Khan told the House during question hour that focused efforts were being made to enhance exports of agriculture products including fruits and vegetables to the Russian federation.

He said recently a thirty-member delegation of food items exporters visited Russian federation and participated in “World Food Moscow” festival. Pakistani products were introduced in a big way in the Russian market and the Russian federation has shown interest in import of agri-products including rice from Pakistan.

He pointed out that major export items to Russia are cotton fabrics, fruit preparations, synthetic fabrics, sports goods, hosiery and textile material.

Responding to a question, Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Sheikh Aftab Ahmed informed the house that 26 million unverified mobile phone SIMs had been blocked during the verification process.

He said the government had taken a number of steps to improve the performance of Pakistan International Airlines. The government has injected 16 billion rupees as cash support and 52 million dollars for acquiring 15 aircrafts on dry lease. He pointed out that loss making routes, both international and domestic, had been suspended and aircrafts were deployed on profitable routes.
