‘Extortion group’ behind Baldia factory fire: JIT report

A report by a joint investigation team (JIT) has revealed that an extortion group was behind the arson attack that led to the country’s deadliest factory fire claiming 259 lives.

The JIT investigating the 2012 factory fire in Karachi’s BaldiaTown has prepared an initial report after recording statements of the factory owners in Dubai. Sources privy to the investigation said the initial report reveals that an organised gang of extortionists in Karachi elaborately planned and executed the attack which resulted in the factory fire.

The sources said that further forensic tests would be conducted by the JIT in the ongoing investigation into the factory fire.

CTD ARRESTS TWO ACCUSED OF EXTORTION

The Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) arrested two persons involved in target killings and extortion and recovered arms from their possession on Friday.

SP CTD Usman Bajwa said that crackdowns were conducted against criminals in Garden and Manghopir localities of the metropolis city of Karachi. He said during separate raids two accused including Muhammad Yaqoob alias Mama and Muhammad Adnan alias Billu were arrested.

Arms including one LMG, three Kalashnikovs, one rifle, a repeater, a pistol and dozens of rounds of different bores were recovered from the possession of the nabbed culprits. Cases have been lodged against the apprehended culprits and they were being interrogated.
