DIG Traffic Karachi Dr Amir Ahmed Shaikh said on Saturday that construction of Southern Bypass would be the best solution to divert traffic from congested intra-city roads.
The official observed that Karachi needed construction of the abandoned Southern Bypass to overcome traffic problems and divert heavy traffic from intra-city roads which, according to him, were creating troubles for commuters, motorists as well as pedestrians.
Talking to this news agency, Shaikh said that the earlier project of Southern Bypass envisaged an alternative inter-city route from Karachi Port Trust (East and West Wharf) to National Highway and it might have reduced the burden of commercial vehicles, including dumpers, trucks, water tankers, and other heavy vehicles from different roads but it could not be constructed.
He said the traffic issue was not new, but was increasing due to a huge number of vehicles’ registration in the city. He said at least 900 new vehicles were being registered on a daily basis which was quite alarming.
The official was of the view that the authorities needed to find out a solution to the traffic problem on an urgent basis. He recalled that the Sindh High Court had called heavy vehicles which were behind 75 per cent of road accidents the killing machines during a hearing.
Shaikh said that proper work of road construction and removal of encroachments could ease the flow of traffic and end traffic jams. He said they were going to make the Lyari Expressway a dual carriageway that would help reduce traffic congestion on different roads.
