Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has raised the issue of ceasefire violations by India along the Line of Control (LoC) and the Working Boundary (WB) during a meeting with US Secretary of State John Kerry on the sidelines of the 70th session of the United Nations General Assembly.

Kerry appreciated Pakistan’s counter terrorism efforts and the success of anti-terror operation. He also expressed grief over the recent terrorist attack on Pakistan Air force (PAF) camp in Badaber.

While discussing bilateral cooperation on a wide range of issues, he conveyed to Sharif that US President Barack Obama is looking forward to the premier’s visit to Washington in October.

Discussing the regional security situation, Kerry also lauded Pakistan’s efforts for peace and reconciliation in Afghanistan. Sharif assured him that Pakistan would fully support an Afghan-led reconciliation process with militant groups, including Taliban. He also reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to resolving all issues with India through dialogue.

Addressing the media after the meeting, Acting Representative of United States for Pakistan and Afghanistan Laurell Miller said the US urges both Pakistan and India to engage in a dialogue and take steps to de-escalate tension on the borders.

Responding to a question about the heavy cost Pakistan is paying in the war against terrorism, Miller said the US recognises Pakistan’s sacrifices.

Commenting on on-going reconciliation efforts in Afghanistan, Miller said her government “absolutely and strongly” supports the peace process in Afghanistan, adding, “We appreciate the efforts Pakistan government has taken to that end.”
