White Lies

Ayesha Mumtaz, the dynamic chief of the Punjab Food Authority, finally took the bull by the horns. She raided and sealed a restaurant in Lahore’s Gawalmandi area whose owner enjoyed the friendship of the province’s first son.

The first son then called the lady to have the action reversed. She replied that this no-exceptions policy was his father’s express directive. If there has been a change, perhaps he himself should give her a call.

No such call came. Giving credit where it is due. And since it is due rarely, one thought it wise to relate the incident.

All hell has broken loose ever since the editor of this very paper broke the news that the marriage between Imran Khan and former political anchor Reham Khan is on the rocks.

And the rumour rankles, because bits of hearsay might be dime-a-dozen, but this report is by the same person who broke the news of the marriage in the first place.

The twit hit the fan on Twitter. PTI supporters are infamous for being a bit too spirited, but the party leadership was also on in full force. Criticising a political party is one thing, tweeted the party’s spokesperson, but spreading malicious lies about the personal life of a party leader is “sick”.

Interesting lecture in journalistic ethics from a lady who was once the editor of a paper while she was a member of a political party. Also, in whose stint at said paper, headlines maligning foreign journalists were subsequently admitted to be baseless.
