IGP seeks Witnesses Protection Act’s enforcement

A high-level meeting was held at CPO on Wednesday which was chaired by Sindh IGP GH Jamali and attended among others by Additional IGP Traffic, Additional IGP CTD, Additional IGP Karachi, DIG Headquarters, DIG DL, DIG Crimes, DIG RRF, DIG CTD, AIG Finance, AIG Administration, and AIG Legal.

The meeting discussed in detail the ways and means to ensure implementation of Witnesses Protection Act (WPA). The Additional IGP CTD spelled out the spirit of WPA to the house and highlighted its significance in the existing scenario. It was decided to establish the Witness Protection Unit (WPU) to be headed by Additional IGP CTD as required under the Act.

It was further decided to approach the provincial home department to actualize WPU’s physical establishment. “Till the WPU’s physical functioning, it is imperative to convey to Additional IGP Karachi and all Range DIGs to ensure protection to witnesses, particularly those related to high profile cases as an immediate measure in accordance with the spirit of WPA,” the IG directed.

The IGP also constituted a committee under Additional IGP CTD with DIG Headquarters and DIG Administration, Karachi Police and SSP CTD Aamir Faruqi as secretary of the committee to frame rules for the working of WPU at the earliest.
