Residents of the capital have demanded construction of shelters for passengers at the major bus stops in the city.

Commuters are facing serious problems in the federal capital due to absence of proper bus stops, particularly on the Islamabad Highway.

Hundreds of commuters use local transport for travelling in the city, but have to wait on the roadside and face harsh weather conditions and other dangers. Commuters expressed disappointment that the Capital Development Authority (CDA) had yet to install overhead bridges on the main crossing points, particularly the Zero Point Interchange.

Residents complained about the absence of shelters at bus stops such as GPO, Civic Centre, Lal Masjid, Three Number (Itwar Bazar), PIA Eastern side, CDA, Fire Brigade, Urdu University and Zero Point among others.

Mumtaz Ali a commuter waiting at Zero Point bus stop said that he always waited on the footpath or the side of the road for transport due to absence of proper bus stop and sheds. “In summer, it becomes difficult for the commuters to wait in scorching heat without sheds,” he said.

Mohsin Ali, a senior citizen pointed out that pedestrian bridges erected over different roads could not be used by aged people and persons with disabilities.

Bakhat Rawaan, a 62 years old resident of G-6/2 sector said Zebra crossings at busy roads of the capital were not providing a safe passage to the pedestrians, as most of the drivers had no awareness about these crossings and therefore, did not bother to stop and let people cross safely.

When contacted, an official of CDA said the civic body was planning to construct overhead bridges and bus stops and other facilities which were either damaged or removed during construction work on the roads and highways.
