Punjab govt bridles private schools against fee hike

The Punjab government on Saturday issued a notification barring the private schools from increasing fees this year. The notification says that the schools that have already increased the fees will have to take the decision back.

According to details, the Punjab government has decided to start a crackdown from Monday against non-conforming schools. Three teams have been set up for Lahore, two each for bigger districts and one team for the smaller ones to make sure that the order is implemented.

The notification freezes the schools’ fees at the 2014-15 position and bars the private schools from increasing it this year. The ordinance also says that the schools that have already increased the fees will have to either refund the additional money collected from students or adjust it in the next month’s fees. A daily fine of Rs 10,000 to 25,000 will have to be paid in case of noncompliance and the application will be sent to the court in case of noncompliance for 30 days.

Moreover, the ordinance binds the unregistered private schools to get them registered within next 45 days otherwise the in-charge or the owner of the school will be arrested.
