Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said on Tuesday that Pakistan’s future lies in continuation of democracy.

“In democracy lies our ideology, survival and identity,” the prime minister said in his message on the United Nation (UN)’s International Democracy Day.

He said that democracy was getting a strong foothold in Pakistan and had resulted in remarkable improvement in social and economic fields.

He said the general election was declared fair and independent by the judiciary and it was an important milestone towards a strong democracy.

He said that as the UN’s International Day of Democracy was annually held on September 15 with this year’s theme being ‘Space for Civil Society’, the government had implemented this concept in its true spirit.

The prime minister said that for the first time in the country’s history, local governments would be in place side by side with the federal and provincial governments.

He said that with functioning local governments, the common man would enjoy the right of making his own decisions in a democratic way.

He said that the manifesto of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) was a guiding principle in ensuring the sovereignty of the masses, and the government was fully implementing this vision.

Sharif said that the democratic process had helped in developing public consensus against terrorism, which also had its positive outcome in the shape of success in Operation Zarb-e-Azb.

He said the democratic system was reflective of the people’s desires and aspirations and was also a solution for their economic and social problems.

He said democracy ensured connectivity with the global world and was the guiding force for high moral values and human rights.

The prime minister said that the country would continue to uphold democratic norms and values.
