The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) recently issued a Computerized National Identity Card (CNIC) to a bureaucrat mentioning him as a ‘eunuch’ and when the bureaucrat complained to the authority about the mistake, he was told to present a medical certificate establishing his gender as male.

According to a report by journalist Umar Cheema, the mistake was made during the data entry process.

“If the operator inadvertently hit the wrong key, the bureaucrat also didn’t check the information whereas NADRA’s SOP demands proof reading for altering the submitted details,” said the journalist.

The report further adds that third option has been created in the gender column for CNIC applicants to accommodate eunuchs in line with the landmark verdict of the Supreme Court. However, only a small number of eunuchs have been registered so far.
