Confiscated meat to be fed to zoo animals

A large quantity of meat confiscated during an operation against unhygienic food will be fed to the zoo animals in Karachi.

“The district administration is making effective efforts to provide food to the animals. Recently, a large quantity of meat has become available as a result of operation by the administration against unhealthy food which would be fed to the zoo animals,” the meeting held under the chairmanship of Commissioner Karachi Shoaib Ahmed Siddiqui with advisory committee for zoo formed by the government, to bring improvement in Safari Park and Karachi Zoo, was told on Tuesday.

The meeting reviewed and encouraged the implementation of decisions taken in previous meeting and made several new decisions. Senior officers of Karachi Metropolitan Corporation, World Wide Fund for Nature Pakistan, Karachi University, Sindh Wild Life representatives of Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industries were also present on the occasion.

The commissioner said the administration of zoo had exalted the nation by celebrating days of national importance. Celebrating the Independence Day, birthday of founder of Pakistan and Defence Day was their national duty through which they raised the spirit of patriotism in people.

The meeting was told that arrangements were being made to open the hospital closed since long in the zoo on October 1. It was decided in the meeting that five people from Safari Park and Karachi Zoo would be sent to Singapore to get skills of management and care for animals on modern scale. Senior Director Culture, Sports and Recreation (CSR) Raza Abbas Rizvi told the meeting that the programme had been finalised with director general of Singapore in this regard through communication.

A committee was formed in the meeting to bring back two bronze statues of lions that had been transferred into Mohatta Palace without permission. The committee comprises senior director CSR, Prof Karachi University Dr Zaheer, representative of KCCI Faisal Mukhtar and a representative of Commissioner Karachi Youth Team which would coordinate with the administration of Mohatta Palace in this regard.
