Police have checked documents of 2,994 students of 11 Madaris (religious seminaries) in the city during the last week, official sources revealed on Sunday.

Sources said the administration of Madaris had been ordered to ban entry of any student without documents. The police also issued an advisory letter to the administration of Madaris regarding security.

Meanwhile, police arrested 275 proclaimed offenders and court absconders from different areas of the city.

Some 102 suspects were arrested by the police during a search operation of various hotels, inns, guest houses, bus terminals and railway station. After investigation, police released 74 people and took action against 28 who could not provide complete documents.

Police registered cases against four persons for violation of the Foreigners Act and sent them to jail while lodging 82 cases against 104 violators of loudspeaker act in all divisions of the city.

During a crackdown against drug peddlers, police arrested 118 drug pushers and recovered 63 kg charas, 53 kg Bhang, 2.7 kg heroin and 647 bottles of liquor.

During a search and sweep operation, police arrested 73 accused for possessing illegal weapons and recovered 39 rifles/guns, 67 pistols and 2,100 rounds of ammunition.

Police also conducted raids at gambling dens and arrested 58 gamblers with stack money.
