Anti-polio drive starts in Punjab

Punjab Chief Minister Health Advisor Khwaja Salman Rafique said on Sunday that a three-day national campaign against polio would start from September 14 in Punjab during which 18 million children of up to five years of age would be administered polio vaccine drops.

Rafique said that vitamin A dose would also be given to children of six months of age.

The health advisor said that Punjab was polio-free so far during 2015 and that the government was determined to carry out every effort to make the entire country polio free.

Rafique said that Health Department had constituted 39,877 polio teams for the campaign. He said that about 35 thousand mobile teams would visit door to door for giving polio drops to the children. He said that special teams had been deputed on the transactional points of the province including railway stations, bus terminals, airports and highway toll plazas for vaccination of traveling children.

Rafique also appealed to the parents to ensure their children get vaccinated against polio to protect them from permanent disability. He said that taking care of children’s health is prime responsibility of the parents. Therefore, they should extend all possible cooperation with the visiting mobile teams.
