Minister woos farmers with ‘grainy’ promises

Addressing farmers in protest sit-in of Kisan Raaj on Mall Road, Punjab Minister for Agriculture Dr Farrukh Javed has said that present government is bringing the biggest support package of the history for farmers.

He said that all genuine demands of cultivators regarding rice, cotton, sugarcane and agri machinery are being fulfilled. He said that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif will announce the historic package for farmers within next few days. He said that this package will be an important step towards prosperous Punjab and Pakistan. He said that despite opposition by the sugar industry, the chief minister fixed the price of sugarcane at Rs 180 per maund while Rs 150 per maund was given in Sindh. Punjab government is introducing agri road reforms throughout the province at a cost of Rs 150 billion.

Dr Javed said that farmers of Punjab should be thankful to Shehbaz Sharif for his farmer-friendly steps. He said that he himself is a farmer and has raised voice at every level for fulfilling the genuine demands of cultivators.

On the assurance by agriculture minister, the farmers ended their protest sit-in and the road was opened for traffic.

Earlier, when the minister reached the sit-in of farmers, the farmer leaders raised slogans in his favour and told their demands. Farmer leaders Arslan Khaqwani, Jam Ghanzafar Abbas, Abid Khan and others thanked Agriculture Minister for participating in the protest of farmers and described him their ambassador. Talking to the farmers, Dr Javed assured them that present government is making serious efforts for resolving the problems of farmers.
