The Supreme Court has admitted a petition seeking the release of important sealed documents by an inquiry commission regarding the Lal Masjid operation.
A three-member SC bench headed by Chief Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali took up for hearing a petition filed by Advocate Tariq Asad and sent a notice to the federal government, seeking a reply within two weeks.
The petitioner took the plea that three different issues were being heard in the Lal Masjid case. They included a suo motu case taken up in 2007 against the Lal Masjid operation, a constitutional petition filed in 2007 and a petition seeking initiation of contempt of court proceedings on non-implementation of court orders.
The petitioner a detailed report in connection with the operation has been presented in the court. “Certain things in the report have been submitted in sealed envelopes and certain matters are not in our knowledge. These matters will come to open when the record is unsealed. We request the documents should be opened,” he said.
Justice Jamali remarked, “Before giving any observation we want to hear the other party too. We, however, issue a notice to the federal government and seek a reply from them. A decision on opening of the sealed documents or otherwise will be given after a reply is received from the federation government.”
The hearing was adjourned for two weeks.
