Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Pervez Khattak along with parliamentary leaders of all political parties will present their case regarding income from net hydel profit before the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) on Tuesday.
The WAPDA hydroelectric company had sought an increase of Rs 2.11 per unit in its tariff from the NEPRA. The new tariff of Rs 3.85 per unit of bulk supply tariff to the National Transmission Dispatch Company will be applicable from July 01, 2015. The existing tariff of hydro power is Rs 1.74 per unit.
According to sources, the WAPDA has shown the revenue requirement of Rs 122.5 billion for current financial year. The government had earlier directed the WAPDA to pass on the entire financial burden of net hydel profit to the consumers with effect from July 1, 2015. The profit is payable for all the hydro power stations located in KPK, Punjab and Azad Kashmir.
The KPK government is currently being paid Rs 6 billion as net hydel profit. But it is demanding to uncap the rate of net hydel profit. According to estimates, Punjab will get Rs 9.5 billion, KPK Rs 18.8 billion and AJK Rs 6.5 billion as net hydel profit during the current fiscal year.
The increase sought by the WAPDA if approved by the NEPRA would enable the government to make the water uses charges and share in net hydel profit part of the electricity tariff.
