The Supreme Court (SC) on Thursday stayed the conversion of NARC land into a housing scheme and ordered the Capital Development Authority (CDA), federal government and the petitioner to submit their response in writing within 10 days.

The court also ordered that the summary submitted by the CDA to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif for conversion of the land into housing scheme would remain pending till the next hearing.

It was argued on behalf of the petitioner that 1,395 acres of land was allotted for agriculture research in 1975. The petition said that CDA now wants to convert the NARC land into a housing scheme and a summary has been submitted to the prime minister for approval. It was submitted that research is carried out at the NARC with international institutions to promote agriculture in the country.

Chief Justice Jawwad S Khawaja remarked that the land was not the personal property of CDA. The apex court stopped the PM from approval of the summary till next hearing.
