Court proceedings remain suspended on senior lawyer’s demise

The court proceedings remained suspended in the Sindh High Court and subordinate courts on Wednesday to condole the demise of senior lawyer Abdul Hafeez Pirzada.

One of the most senior lawyers of Pakistan and author of 1973 constitution, Abdul Hafeez Pirzada passed away in London last night. The former law minister had surgery of his intestine which resulted in an organ failure and caused the death, says media reports.

Pirzada was one of the founding leaders of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and known as an aide of former prime minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto. He represented Bhutto along with Mubashir Hasan in a murder case.

In 70s, Pirzada remained PPP’s legislator and a senior member of prime minister Bhutto’s cabinet. He served as a law minister and also a member of committee that formed the 1973 constitution of Pakistan.

In 1980, Pirzada withdrew himself from active politics but kept his full concentration on his legal career. He had last represented Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) in the judicial commission which was constituted to probe the alleged rigging in general election 2013.

He was one of the most successful and highly paid lawyers of Pakistan. “I earn Rs 120 to 130 million annually,” he had stated in an interview in 2007. He had surgery of his intestine which resulted in organ failure and caused the death in Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading in the West of London on 1st September. He is survived by two sons, two daughters and a wife.
