The legal fraternity of Karachi boycotted courts on Saturday and staged a protest demonstration against the assassination of advocate of Sindh High Court (SHC), Syed Ameer Haider Shah.

The Karachi Bar Association initially gave the protest call which was later endorsed by the Malir Bar Association and the Sindh Bar Council. “The lawyers would observe province-wide boycotts of court proceedings till Monday,” the Sindh Bar Council announced later.

The lawyers on Saturday took out a rally and staged a protest demonstration outside the Rangers headquarters. They demanded the Sindh chief minister and DG Rangers to arrest his killers.

They stage a sit-in outside the Rangers headquarters and demanded arrest of the killers. The lawyers ended their sit-in after successful talks between lawyer leadership and Rangers official.

The paramilitary force assured them of arresting the Shah’s killer within one week. On the other hand, lawyers’ leadership committed that none of their fraternity member would appear on behalf of suspects involved in the targeted killing. It is pertinent to mention here that Syed Ameer Haider Shah was the second lawyer killed this month as another senior advocate, Ashfaq Ahmed, was gunned down on 3rd August near Gulshan-e-Iqbal.

Shah, 35, an advocate of the Sindh High Court and former joint secretary of KBA, was gunned down on 29th August near Hassan Square, while his assistant Shahid Chandio remained safe in the attack. The unknown assailants, riding on a motorbike, attacked him when he was on his way home from the city court. He sustained several wounds and was rushed to a nearest hospital where the doctors declared him dead.

Inspector General Ghulam Haider Jamali has constituted a special investigation team to probe the killing. The team will probe the murder of Shah under the supervision of Additional IG Karachi whereas other member of the team includes DIG Counter Terrorism Department and district South’s DIG, SSP and SSP investigation.
