The operation theater and cardiac emergency center at Sindh Government Hospital Liaquatabad have almost become non-functional due to shortage of specialist doctors, sources at the hospital told PPI on Tuesday.
They said all the major surgeries had been stopped in the hospital due to acute shortage of surgeons, while the provincial health department had failed to fill vacant posts in the healthcare. Some senior surgeons had retired from their posts while few were transferred to other hospitals, therefore, all major surgeries had been stopped as only minor operation was being performed.
The patients with major surgery requirements are being referred to AbbasiShaheedHospital, Civil Hospital Karachi, and other hospitals. Shortage of surgeons is causing grave inconvenience to the patients with major surgery requirements.
Similarly, CardiacEmergencyCenter at Sindh Government Hospital Liaquatabad is also non-functional owing to shortage of cardiologists. Around 100 patients visit Cardio OPD every day, out of which 10 to 15 require emergency treatment, but such cases are being referred to National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases and other hospitals as no senior cardiologist are available here.
Medical Superintendent, Sindh Government Hospital Liaquatabad, Dr Ansar Ahmed Ansari, when contacted, said the hospital urgently needed surgeons and cardiologists to deal with the rising number of patients in the healthcare. He said a request had been sent to health department Sindh for provision of surgeons to make Operation Theater functional.
He said a number of visiting patients had been increasing with every passing day in 200-bed hospital and around 1500 to 2000 patients visit OPDs on daily basis. He said hospital offered all major OPDs to residents of Liaquatabad, Nazimabad, FB Area and other neighbouring localities free of cost.
