Inquiry against ghost pensioners called

Senate Standing Committee on Finance and Revenue has decided to conduct an in-depth inquiry of ghost pensioners in the federal, provincial departments, and all other public departments dealing directly or indirectly with the pension matters.

Committee Chairman Senator Saleem Mandviwalla, called an important meeting of the Senate Standing Committee on Finance and Revenue on September 3 to discuss the pension structure in the country.

In a statement issued on Monday, he said that the committee will look into the matter deeply and have an overall briefing on the pension structure, number of pensioners for the last fifteen years, their departments, total monthly pension drawing by the pensioners.

Mandviwalla said that the number of accounts closed owing to death of pensioners and their spouses. The percentage of pensioners increasing or decreasing during said period, criteria for the disbursement of pension and the role and responsibility of the concerned departments in this regard after retirement of its employees.

He said that the committee has detected the ghost pensioners scandal by default but now will look into the matter very deeply because it shows the failure on part of the concerned departments.

Mandviwalla said that Pakistan needs a modern and transparent pension system. The committee will assist all the departments and give its recommendations to develop a system which is credible.

He said that all the relevant departments have been called to attend the committee meeting.
