Meeting suggests halting ongoing admissions on sports-basis till appointment of regular VC

The syndicate of Government College University (GCU), Lahore, has timely intervened to resolve the administrative, financial and academic crisis that the institution is facing due to absence of a vice chancellor (VC).

The Syndicate, in an emergent meeting summoned by the registrar under section 2(c) of the GCU Syndicate Business Rules 2004, has delegated limited powers under The Government College University, Lahore Ordinance 2002 to Faculty of Science and Technology Dean Dr Islamullah Khan to address a few financial, administrative and academic matters of urgent nature to ensure routine functioning of the university until the appointment of a VC.

The syndicate also approved the on-going admission process. However, it recommended halting the admissions on sports basis till the appointment of regular VC.

It is pertinent to mention here that there are about 100 students on sports basis whose admissions are at stake due to non-availability of VC in the varsity.

The 18th meeting of GCU Syndicate was chaired by University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences Lahore Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Talat Naseer Pasha with mutual consent of the members which included representatives of finance, law and higher education departments, besides Lahore High Court Justice Shujaat Ali Khan, former LHC chief justice (r) Khawaja Muhammad Sharif, prominent cricketer Shafqat Rana, Punjab Assembly members Muhammad Hassan Riaz and Nazia Raheel

The Syndicate said that as per the under the GCU Ordinance 2002, it had powers to hold, control and administer the property and funds of the university and can, without prejudice, intervene to ensure the smooth functioning of the university.

The Syndicate members also appreciated the university’s administration for timely convening the syndicate meeting.

GCU Registrar Dr Akhyar Farukh who summoned the meeting of syndicate told Pakistan Today that he made a request to the Syndicate to craft a way forward for the admissions of students on sports-basis but the Syndicate decided to halt the admissions till the appointment of a permanent VC.

He further added that the Saturday’s meeting was meant to ensure the timely release of salaries of non-gazetted staff.

Dr Farukh was of the view that Dr Islamullah khan has not been given the charge of acting VC but has been delegated some limited powers to administer some financial matters.

According to some sources in the university, the meeting was convened to avoid further embarrassment as university transport was left with fuel of only one day and only VC has the powers to release the funds. Some sources claimed that the government officials assured the university administration that the VC will be appointed in the coming week.
