PEC election will be held under biometric system: SHC told

The Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC) on Friday told the Sindh High Court (SHC) that its election would be held under biometric system.

The court had already appointed Justice (r) Khilji Arif Hussain as its Nazir to conduct PEC election. The Nazir would have all the powers to conduct day-to-day affairs of the PEC and to operate account for conduct of day-to-day business payment. The learned counsel on Friday’s hearing reflected that NADRA’s assistance will be taken in this regard and PEC will ensure that election should take place on time.

The SHC bench in its order stated that it has no objection over awarding contract to anyone who is offering better technical assistance for conducting biometric election in fewer prices.

Earlier, the PEC chairman had filed a petition stating that election for PEC were scheduled for July 2015, but due to some reasons, they were not able to conduct it. Now the election has been rescheduled for 30th August 2015.

The petitioner prayed the court to direct Federation of Pakistan not to interfere into the election process of PEC, because as per PEC Act, 1976, the existing election committee of the PEC is fully empowered for conducting free and fair elections.

The petitioner stated that the governing body had already initiated the election process. He prayed to the court to allow this body to complete re-polling process of suspended election. The petitioner pleaded the court to appoint its Nazir to monitor the election process conducted under the existing body.

The SHC in last hearing appointed Justice (r) Khilji Arif Hussain as its Nazir for conducting fair and free PEC election for the period of 2015 to 2018.
