The Supreme Court (SC) on Friday ordered the formation of a commission on the matter of escape of Ogra scandal’s main suspect Tauqeer Sadiq.
A three-member bench headed by Chief Justice Jawwad S Khawaja was hearing the over Rs 82 billion Ogra scandal case.
During the hearing, Prosecutor National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Waqas Qadeer Dar told the court that no one has been proven guilty in the matter.
The Chief Justice stated that NAB’s report on Tauqeer Sadiq’s escape is merely a pretension. He said that millions were spent to bring him back to the country.
On Chief Justice’s inquiry, the prosecutor told the court that chairman NAB is abroad for his treatment. The judge asked that whether or not the disease can be treated in Pakistan.
Chief Justice Jawwad S Khawaja adjourned the hearing till next week and directed to form a commission regarding the matter.
It is pertinent to mention that former Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) chief Tauqir Sadiq is the principal accused in the Rs 82 billion scam case, and fled to Abu Dhabi after the Supreme Court on November 25, 2011, declared his appointment as chairman OGRA illegal and ordered his arrest for corruption.
Tauqeer Sadiq, according to an interim reference provided by NAB, had provided undue financial relief to firms and individuals and issued licenses for CNG stations on bogus documents.
He allegedly had close links with a senior leader of the PPP who reportedly played a major role in his escape from Pakistan despite cancellation of his passport and inclusion of his name in the Exit Control List (ECL).
He was brought back from Dubai to appear in the case but again fled the country.
