As many as 30 posts of doctors, general and specialists cadre, and 70 staff nurses are lying vacant in Lyari General Hospital (LGH) Karachi, it was learned on Thursday.
Sources at the hospital on condition of anonymity said 500-bed Sindh government’s Lyari General Hospital Karachi is considered one of the major teaching healthcare centres of the city where around 2,500 to 3,000 people visit its various outdoor patient departments for consultation and treatment daily.
The hospital administration has been facing great hardships ensuring that the hospital continues to run smoothly and services are provided to people around the clock.
The hospital management has been facing an acute shortage of doctors to run departments in a smooth manner way, while seats for staff nurses are also lying vacant. They said only 50 nurses are available in hospital in three-shifts.
The provincial health department had ordered that the posts for the doctors be filled about two years ago, but a majority f the doctors refused to join the hospital because of the poor law and order situation, and some other reason. The patient care in hospital has badly disturbed due to shortage of doctors and staff nurses.
The patients and residents of the area demanded the provincial health department to fill the vacant posts to improve the health delivery system in healthcare.
When contacted, Secretary Health Sindh Saeed Ahmed Mangnejo said around 1,000 doctors’ posts are lying vacant across the Sindh province and new doctors will soon be hired through the Public Service Commission to overcome shortage.
He said that law and order situation has been improved in Lyari Town and health department will appoint doctors to fill the shortage and also to improve patient care in hospital.
