New Benazir International Airport to get its own water reservoirs

A decision has been taken to construct two dams to supply water to the New Benazir International Airport (NBIA) Islamabad

The under-construction NBIA is likely to be completed next year and a standby water arrangement for the airport was being sorted out on an emergency basis, said an official.

NBIA Project Director Brig Pervez Ahmad said that the underground water around the airport was far deeper and the rain was the only source of water in the location and consultants have proposed construction of three small dams.

He said that it has been decided to build two small dams including Rama and Kasana dams at the first instant.

He said that a land has been acquired for the construction of these two dams in consultation with the district management. “The two dams will have the storage capacity sufficient to meet water needs of the airport for 35 years,” he said.

Another official said that the feasibility report for the Rama Dam has been completed and tenders for construction will be invited in the current month.
