An accountability court on Tuesday extended physical remand of Qasim Zia, former Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP) Punjab president and Pakistan Hockey Federation former president, in Rs 80 million scam case.

Earlier, the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) officials produced the accused before Accountability Court-IV Judge Khaqan Babar and requested the court to extend physical remand for another 15 days.

However, Zia’s counsel opposed the request submitting that his client resigned as director Ali Usman Securities in 2008 after he came to know about irregularities in the firm. He further submitted that the accused had already made payment of Rs 35 million from his pocket to the affectees.

The court after hearing arguments of both parties extended the remand for another six days and directed the NAB officials to produce Qasim again on August 24.

The NAB had arrested Zia along with other directors of Ali Usman securities for cheating public at large, misappropriation, embezzlement of funds and criminal breach of trust. More than 80 affectees filed their complaints with the NAB against the accused.
