PPP leader Akhunzada Chattan’s son kidnapped

Unidentified people on Monday kidnapped the 10-year-old son of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Central Executive Committee member Syed Akhunzada Chattan.

Chattan, a former MNA from Bajaur Agency, told reporters that his youngest son, Shah Hussain had stepped out of the house for school when unidentified persons spirited him away in a vehicle. The former MNA said that he had been receiving threats from banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), but added that there had not yet been any contact with the kidnappers.

Meanwhile, police officials have said that Chattan had been provided a security detail comprising 17 levies personnel.

Commenting on the police’s statement, Chattan said that his children are accompanied by gunmen but the youngest had left for school before his brothers. The guards had fired on the kidnappers but by then they were out of range, he added.

Former president and PPP Co-Chairman Asif Ali Zardari has expressed his concern over the kidnapping and has demanded that the Bajaur Agency administration make efforts to recover the child and bring his kidnappers to justice. Akhunzada Chattan has also asked the government to help in bringing his son home.

The abduction has become yet another addition to the list of high profile kidnappings in Pakistan; Shahbaz Taseer, the son of late Governor Punjab Salman Taseer was kidnapped in 2011 and former Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gillani’s son Ali Haider Gillani was kidnapped in 2013.
