Camp Jail takes lead in compiling data of all inmates

The 85-year-old Camp Jail has taken lead in computerising complete data of all inmates housed since March 2014.

Senior Superintendent Camp Jail Shahram Tauqir Khan said on Sunday that the pilot project of Prisons Management Information System (PMIS) was launched in Camp Jail for complete computerisation of inmates’ data.

Highlighting the distinctive features of the project, he said a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the UNODC and the Home Department was signed on July 2, 2014 for complete computerisation of Punjab Prisons Department in a phased plan.

Under the pilot project, he said, the database of an average number of nearly 22,000 plus inmates has been developed by using automated finger/palm print identification system. He said it will help facilitate visitors through fast-track registration of interviews and instant redressal of public grievances.

He said complete address and computerised national identity cards of all visitors have also been stored in this system for quick reference. He said the PMIS will also ensure timely production of under-trial inmates besides managing day to day affairs of the prisons.

He said complete transfer and posting and leaves record of entire staff including superintendents of Jail, deputy, assistant superintendents and wardens have also be maintained in this system.

Elaborating on another feature, he said that complete particulars of prisoners includes name, alias, gender, caste, district, province, country, father and grandfather name, date of birth, martial status, number of children, name of spouses, complete address, identification mark, scar, status, category, class, nature of offence, barrack number, thumb prints, address, education, under section sentence awarded, nature of offence, FIR number, name of police station, name of trial court, appeals, medical and criminal history and behaviour.

Shahram said that after successful completion of the project, the prisoners can easily be identified by name, thumb prints, image, date of admission, FIR, date of conviction and other details.

About the training of staff, he said that warden have been imparted computer education on the special directive of Prisons chief Mian Farooq Nazeer and Deputy Inspector General Lahore Range Mubashar Ahmad Khan had been regularly inspecting the project.

The PMIS will further be extended to all other jails in a phased manner.

It is pertinent to mentioned here that Punjab home secretary, prisons chief, DIG and other senior officers also visited the jail few days ago to check the successful launching of data of prisoners which will be linked with main data centre established at the IG office.
