India pulls gates on Sutlej, 5 villages inundated

Flood water on Saturday inundated as many as five villages as torrent of about 55,000 cusecs is passing at Ganda Singh point after India pulled gates of River Sutlej.

Water level has risen to at least 19 feet and 3,000 acres land is inundated.  The district administration has started relocating people residing on river banks.

Affected villages include Bhaki Wind, Katti Kalanjar, Basti Kamal Pura and Mastay Kay. Rescue 1122 staffers and administration are shifting people to safer places using boats.

However, most of the administration officials are busy with joint investigation team (JIT) members who are assigned to probe Kasur child abuse scandal. The affectees have not been provided relief goods and the people are facing grave issues.

The administration had established camps at Talwar Post at least a month ago but no relief activities have been started yet.
