The Sindh High Court (SHC) reserved on Tuesday its verdict in another contempt of court case against Sindh Police IG Ghulam Haider Jamali, former AIG Ghulam Qadir Thebo and other senior police officers.
A division bench headed by Justice Sajjad Ali Shah was hearing the petition filed by former home minister Zulfiqar Mirza and reserved its verdict after hearing final arguments from both sides. The pronouncement of the verdict was put off to a date to be fixed by the court office later on.
Senior Sindh police officers were facing charges of court contempt for cordoning off and surrounding the Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) on 19th May.
The petitioner, Zulfiqar Mirza, submitted that he was not allowed to go outside despite the court’s order as he appeared before ATC to get his bail extended. Mirza remained in ATC for long time and went home in night after the heavy contingents of police and commandos were removed from there.
Earlier on 12 June, the court had reserved its verdict in another contempt of court case against the same accused on the petition of Zulfiqar Mirza. On May 23, masked and armed policemen had besieged the SHC during Dr Zulifqar Mirza’s presence in court in an apparent bid to arrest him.
The masked personnel had beaten up the guards of Dr Mirza and the several media persons at the main gate of the SHC building. The policemen had also smashed several parked vehicles and snatched cameras from journalists.
The SHC will pronounce its verdict on both contempt of court cases against Jamali, Thebo and others.
