238 cops martyred in Karachi operation: report

Sindh Inspector General (IG) of Police Ghulam Haidr Jamali was presented a report about the Karachi operation on Wednesday which said that 238 police officers and constables sacrificed their life during the last 23 months to ensure safety of life and prosperity of citizens.

According to the report, from 5th September to 4th August 2015, 238 officers including two SPs, five DSPs, six inspectors, 28 sub-inspectors, 29 assistant sub-inspectors, 41 head constables and 127 constables sacrificed their life.

However, police arrested 61,851 suspects during snap-checking, patrolling, big cache of weapons, 15,590 in numbers, was also seized from their possession.

The report says that 1,802 suspects were arrested in murder cases, 879 in terrorism cases, 119 in kidnapping for ransom and 528 in extortion cases. Some 2,775 accused were arrested in robbery cases, 12,053 under weapons act, 9,669 in drug cases, 9,916 absconders and 719 proclaimed offenders were also held while 23,391 other criminals were also detained during this operation.

As many as 1,571 hand grenades, 1422-kg explosive material, 37 suicide jackets, nine IEDs, 18 LMGs, 397 SMGs, 14,614 pistols, 311 rifles and 250 repeaters were recovered from their possession.

In 3,569 police encounters, 331 terrorists, 38 kidnapers, 10 extortionists and 806 dacoits were killed and 1,834 criminal gangs were busted from different parts of city. The IG paid tribute to police martyrs and said sacrifices of police against crimes were unprecedented and unforgettable. He directed to further accelerate the ongoing operation under the national action plan.
