- PDMA says floods claimed 73 lives in KP while NDMA says flooding affected more than 800,000 people in 2,275 villages
With the torrential rains claiming 12 lives across country on Monday with hundreds of villages inundated after breach in protection dyke in Rajanpur and flood in River Indus near Sukkur, authorities say the death toll from flash floods triggered by seasonal monsoon rains in various parts of the country has risen to 118.
According to details, at least six members of a family died in Mamund Tehsil of Bajaur Agency after roof of a house collapsed, leaving five wounded.
Separately in Bhalwal, roof of a seminary collapsed in Ashraf Colony, claiming life of a man. In Dhangana area of Kundian, roof collapse claimed a life and left four injured.
Moreover, a father and daughter lost their lives in Talagang in a rain-related incident. As many as four people have been reported injured in a roof collapse in Gujranwala’s Maralawala area.
DYKE BREACHED:
Meanwhile, dozens of villages were submerged in flood water following breach in Jatoi dyke at Kot Mithan in Rajanpur district. Some families have moved to safer locations while others are still waiting for government’s assistance.
Floods have also drowned several villages of Kot Addu in Muzzafargarh. In Goth Gul Mehr, television footage showed many families taking refuge on trees to escape the devastation of the passing flood.
A bridge was partially damaged due to flooding in seasonal nullah in Kalabagh area, suspending road traffic on Bannu-Mianwali road.
Flood waves have entered Rahim Yar Khan district in south Punjab, while a high-level flood in the River Indus in Sukkur has inundated hundreds of villages by the river banks.
A similar situation was witnessed in Kashmore district of Sindh, where floodwater had inundated villages by banks of the River Indus. The population has been facing shortage of food supplies and drinking water. Some of the affected people said that the local population was unable to relocate due to unavailability of boats.
Meanwhile, the deputy commissioner in Kashmore district claimed the local administration had made adequate arrangements but the local inhabitants of the area were not ready to relocate themselves.
Water inflow at Guddu Barrage has been recorded at 750,000 cusecs. Water level has reached 642 ft at Chashma and 692 ft at Jinnah Barrage. There is high level flood in Indus River at Sukkur, Kotri Barrage and Bhakar.
NDMA, PDMA REPORTS:
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) said in a statement on Monday that the flooding has affected more than 800,000 people in 2,275 villages. About 2,900 houses have collapsed or are partially damaged.
Authorities said the northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province is the worst affected, with 59 deaths reported so far. The Pakistani part of Kashmir and southern part of eastern Punjab province each reported 22 deaths.
The NDMA and military moved tens of thousands of people to safety and provided relief goods.
Moreover, a report by the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) states that 73 people died from flooding in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa during last month.
According to the PDMA report 31 people have been injured and 11 are missing.
The highest number of deaths was reported in Chitral; 34, nine people were killed in Karak, eight in Dir Bala, five in Shangla, four in Peshawar, four in Abbottabad and three in Kohat. Of the over 1,118 homes damaged from floods, 437 were completely destroyed.
OPERATION MADAD:
Meanwhile, more than 4,000 people have been rescued in the last 24-hours by the Pakistan Navy teams deployed at Badin, Khairpur, Sukkur, Pano Aqil, Larkana, Rani Pur and Gambat during the on-going flood relief operation ‘madad’.
Besides transporting them to safe areas and providing them all necessary medical assistance, a tent colony has also been established by Pakistan Navy (PN) at Khairpur for temporary rehabilitation of flood affected people, said a statement issued on Monday.
Presently, more than 700 flood affected people are being accommodated at Pakistan Navy’s relief camp and are being provided with requisite facilities. More than six tonnes of relief goods have also been distributed among them by the Commander Pak Marines stationed at PN rescue camp Sukkur to supervise the relief efforts.
Since the launch of operation ‘madad’, a total of more than 12,000 people have been rescued. Pakistan Navy Field Commands are maintaining close liaison with PDMA and other concerned authorities in civil administration to promptly respond to any flood related emergency.
