Describing terrorism as common threat for Afghanistan and Pakistan, Afghanistan President Ashraf Ghani has said that Pakistan as a neighboring country has responsibility to cooperate with Afghanistan in fighting Taliban and other terrorist groups to reduce violence in Afghanistan.

Addressing a video conference from his hospital bed in Germany, the Afghan president said that confirmation of the death of Mullah Omar by the Afghanistan government had forced Taliban to confirm his death. Describing the development as an opportunity, the president noted that the development marks the end of a bitter phase of history and moving towards a bright future.

Replying a question, Ghani said that he had talked to Pakistani prime minister and chief of army staff and exchanged views on the situation in Afghanistan and the region. The president also said that the development had raised the ray of hope for peace and stability in the country, calling upon armed opposition groups to solve their political problems through negotiations.

“Our main objective is peace between the government of Afghanistan and Pakistan. Afghanistan has faced an undeclared war with Pakistan over the past 14 years and this war should end and both the governments should cooperate in this regard,” Ghani stated.

The Afghan president also said that regional and international terrorism as common threat for Afghanistan and Pakistan had been recognised at the summit of Shanghai Cooperation Organization and BRICS held in Ufa city of Russia and stressed for joint war against the menace.

Ghani, who went through a surgery in a hospital in Germany, said the operation was successful and his health was improving.
