The notification regarding appointment of vice chancellors (VCs) at 10 public sector universities in Punjab is going to be issued in a couple of days, Pakistan Today has learnt.

These appointments for the coveted posts were due for long as the Higher Education Department (HED) had advertised a notification asking aspiring candidates to file their applications by April 28, 2015.

According to sources, Dr Tahir Amin is likely to be appointed as the vice chancellor of Bahauddin Zakriya University (BZU) Multan, Dr Rauf-e-Azam of University of Education Lahore, Dr Saara Shahid of Lahore College for Women University (LCWU), Dr Samina Amin Qadir of Fatima Jinnah Women University Rawalpindi and Dr Hassan Ameer Shah of Government College University Lahore.

The other varsities where the appointment of vice chancellors is yet to be made are University of Sargodha, Government Sadiq College Women University Bahawalpur, The Ghazi University Dera Ghazi Khan, Muhammad Nawaz Sharif University of Engineering & Technology Multan and Khawaja Fareed University of Engineering & Information Technology Raheem Yar Khan.

The selection of VCs is the most debated topic in the universities these days as everyone is curious as to who is going head their institutions. The Government College University (GCU), which had been running without a head since July 24, is abuzz with the news that Dr Hassan Ameer Shah will be appointed its new VC.

Dr Shah, who had taught physics for 12 years in GCU and is a recipient of Sitara-e-Imtiaz told Pakistan Today that he has not received any notification to this effect as yet.

“I am receiving news from various sources regarding my appointment but I’ll be in a position to confirm once the authority concerned hands me the written notification,” Dr Shah said.

Dr Shah, the son of Pakistan People’s Party’s (PPP) former member of Punjab Assembly (MPA) Syed Ameer Hussain Shah, had been heading GCU’s Physics Department in the past and is currently teaching Physics at Forman Christian College University.

A Higher Education Department (HED) official denied that the appointments were being made on an ad-hoc basis.

The government had constituted a search committee for the selection of VCs. The committee consisted of Syed Babar Ali, Dr Ayesha Ghaus Pasha, Punjab Higher Education Commission Chairman Dr Nizam and Secretary HED Irum Bukhari.

Dr Nizam told Pakistan Today that the committee has completed its work and forwarded 30 names to the government for consideration as VCs in 10 universities.

HED Secretary Irum Bukhari said that a summary has been made and final decision regarding appointment of VCs will be announced in a day or two.

  1. The appointment of Dr Hassan Shah as VC Goverment College Univeristy Lahore will be good news for Gujratis . It is pertinent to note that present VC of Punjab University also belongs to Gujrat . The adhocism in appointments of VCs should be discouraged for adminstratly smooth running of Univeristy .

  2. Hopefully,Dr.Hassan Shah will be better VC than Khaleeq ul Rehman who destroyed the ideal environment of Government College University, and filled it with favoritism and intercession.
