The Aitchison College Board of Governors (BOG) on Tuesday removed the principal, Dr Agha Ghazanfar for allegedly refusing admissions to scions of some influential families on kinship basis, hardly months after the noted educationist took charge of the institution for a five-year term.

The BoG has appointed Aitchison Headmaster Ameer Hassan as the acting principal of the college in place of Dr Ghazanfar.

Sources privy to the developments at Aitchison revealed to Pakistan Today that Dr Agha did not enjoy good relations with most of the members of the BoG and the headmaster of the junior school.

Former Punjab governor Makhdoom Ahmad Mahmud, Punjab Finance Minister Dr Ayesha Ghaus Pasha, Mustafa Ramday, Dr Sardar Muhammad Ali Sadiq and Dr Parvez Hassan are members of the BoG. Sources said that all but one member of the board supported the decision to sack Dr Ghazanfar.

Meanwhile it was revealed that the admission test paper for Aitchison was mysteriously leaked a few days before the exam, forcing the administration to set a new paper just a day before the scheduled test.

Interestingly, scions of some of the most influential families of the country, including grandsons of Speaker of the National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq and former prime minister Yousaf Raza Gilani, were going to sit the test this year. However, the children of these political leaders failed to get admission in the prestigious institution as they failed to obtain the required score – Sadiq’s grandson Ayan Sadiq scored 18.78 per cent while Gilani’s grandson Miran Mustafa Gilani obtained 40.22 per cent, much lower than the cutoff score to gain admission.

In total disregard for merit and the fact that former Punjab governor Chaudhry Sarwar had abolished kinship quota last year, the influential personalities started pressurizing Dr Ghazanfar to grant admission to their children. However the principal refused to cave in to their demands even when threatened that he could lose his job, which he did eventually on Tuesday.

Confirming the reasons behind his removal, Dr Ghazanfar said that Aitchison is increasingly becoming a hotbed for corruption and the authorities do not care about merit.

Pakistan Today made repeated attempts to contact the members of the Aitchison BoG but they were unavailable.

  1. This is how PML N operates. Process of destruction of next generation has picked up speed after new Governor was appointed. If questioned Nawaz will deny and then appoint a committee and you will not hear about issue again till he is PM and his brother CM.

  2. It was difficult to decide about what to do because nearly it was the time to do exactly what was the need of time, so it was almost regarded by some other responsive authorities to something in this regard.
