Water meters installation: CM forms committee to prepare feasibility report

Punjab Chief Minister (CM) Shahbaz Sharif has taken notice of the need to install water meters for revenue generation and water conservation, Pakistan Today has learnt.

The CM issued a notice for the formation of a committee on June 30, 2015 for the evaluation of water meters to be procured and installed by all Water and Sanitation Agencies (WASAs) in Punjab, the copy of which is available with Pakistan Today.

According to the notice, the terms of reference of the committee will be to oversee, review and categorise consumer connections as industrial, commercial and domestic, to assess the need for water meters.

The notice stated that the committee will also prioritise the areas for installation of water meters for all WASAs in Punjab and to compare the specifications of water meters manufactured by various international firms.

The notice stated that committee will also submit a plan for installation of meters in a phased manner with ultimate goal of 100 percent metering.

“The committee will also work out the financial layout for procurement and installation of water meters and to recommend a source of funding along with the other related issues regarding water meters,” the notice stated.

The convener of the committee will be HUD and PHE minister and the co-convener is Punjab chief secretary whereas, the members of the committee are Minister Industries Pervaiz Malik, Punjab Assembly members (MPA) Majid Zahoor, Nawaz Chohan, Ali Khokhar, Raja Hanif, secretary HUD and PHE, Secretary Industries Irfan Manan, WASA Faisalabad vice chairman, WASA Faisalabad, Rawalpindi, Gujranawala, Multan MDs and any other member co-opted by the committee.

On July 24, secretary HUD and PHE conveyed to all the members that the meeting of the committee will be held on July 29 under the chairmanship of minister HUD and PHE in the committee room.
