ECP brushes aside Khan’s call for members’ resignation

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Monday rubbished Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan’s demand for the incumbent poll body to resign claiming that they had failed in performing their duties and have lost any moral justification to continue in their roles.

In his press conference following the enquiry commission’s report, Khan had said that there was no moral justification for the electoral body to stay in light of the commission’s observations on the shortcomings of the Election Commission. “If the present Election Commission does not resign – having failed to perform its duties – then it means it will conduct the local government polls in Punjab and Sindh,” Khan had said.

However, the ECP stated that no official would resign as the general election 2013 was the fairest till now.

The Election Commission said that Imran Khan should submit his recommendations to the reforms committee instead of hurling allegations. In light of the recommendations, the general elections of 2018 will be conducted in a better manner, an ECP official said.
