Despite orders by the Supreme Court and High Court of AJK, the government could not appoint a chief election commissioner so far, for the Local Bodies (LB) elections.

Sources said that AJK government and opposition had failed to reach any consensus in this regard, therefore the appointment of CEC was still pending and government was not careful about court decision.

“The AJK High Court had ordered the government to hold LB elections on August 6, 2015. According to the court order only 11 days are left to complete the court time, the government could not complete its basic work including the preparation of electoral rolls. Even the CEC was not appointed unanimously.

“Former CEC Chaudhry Munir after completing its tenure have retired and this post was still vacant which could not be fulfilled due negligence of government so far,” the sources added.

It is pertinent to mention here that the AJK government had challenged the verdict of AJK High Court in the Supreme Court but the apex court maintained the order of lower court and issued an order to hold LB election on August 6th, 2015.

Media reports say that AJK government has filed an application in AJK High Court to delay LB elections.

Legal experts was of the view that government has already violated the court decision, if the application would be rejected then a contempt of court case can be registered against it.

“If the CEC is not appointed in time by the government, then LB elections along with upcoming general elections of AJK could be delayed,” experts added.
