The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has initiated grand operation against illegal slums and other encroachments in different areas of the Capital City.

The Enforcement Directorate of the Authority on Wednesday demolished more than 85 illegal houses constructed on the green belts between Sector I-9 and H-10.

The operation was conducted under the supervision of Deputy Director General Estate and Land, which was also participated by the Assistant Commissioner ICT, SSP Police, area DSP Police, Police Force and the Enforcement staff of CDA.

During the operation, dozens of the illegal constructed slums were razed using the heavy machinery. Whereas some of the illegal occupants have been given two days extension to remove the encroachments at their own at their request and commitment failing which CDA would raze those illegal houses as well.

According to a CDA official, prior to Eidul Fitr, CDA intimated the illegal occupants and the encroachers through public awareness notices, announcements in the mosques and through the media for vacating the CDA land in the adverse possession to avoid the operation against them. However, on ground investigations revealed that the slum dwellers had not received any such information.

The operation is being carried out with the approval of the Ministry of Interior. The Islamabad High Court had also directed for operation against illegal slums in the Capital City. CDA has announced that this operation would be conducted on daily basis to ensure removal of the encroachments. Special teams of Enforcement Directorate would continue operation on Thursday in Sector I-10 and H-10.

Member Administration and Estate, Amer Ali Ahmed has directed to vigorously carry out the operation across the board to ensure vacation of CDA land from the encroachers and removal of the illegal slums. He also directed to ensure an effective monitoring mechanism to discourage re-emergence of encroachments in these areas and make this campaign a success.

The CDA is yet to provide any information on any resettlement or relocation plan for the people that it is evicting from such areas. What happens to them once they lose their homes is still a big question mark.
