CDGL to bring down 567 dilapidated buildings in Walled City

As many as 567 buildings in the provincial capital have been declared unfit to live in 9 towns and within the jurisdiction of Walled City Lahore Authority (WCLA) and operation has been started to evacuate or demolish these buildings.

This was revealed in the survey report conducted by the administration of 9 towns of the City District Government Lahore (CDGL) and the WCLA on the orders of the Punjab chief secretary.

Lahore Division Commissioner Abdullah Khan Sumbal summoned a meeting of the DCO and heads of departments concerned last week to review the strategy to vacate or demolish dangerous buildings with an aim to avoid any untoward incident during the current Monsoon season.

According to the statistics of the official report, 371 out of 567 total dilapidated buildings were declared dangerous for living in the CDGL towns while 196 were identified in the WCLA.

Official sources said that the WCLA has 9 wards within its jurisdiction where total 264 units have been found unfit to live out of which 68 have been demolished by the WCLA during May and June.

Administration of towns following the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) of the CDGL issued notices to the owners of the buildings asking them to vacate immediately before the start of Monsoon or demolish on their own expenses to avoid any loss to the neighbouring people.

More than 200 buildings also have been recommended for necessary repair in the towns and the task will be completed soon.

Such buildings that were not demolished by the owners so far, would be demolished by the CDGL and all expenses would be collected from the owners.

According to the officials of the City District Government, an operation against the dangerous buildings has been started and these building would be evacuated or demolished as early as possible to avoid any danger.
