MQM splitting into three factions, claims report

The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) is likely to divide into three groups in the near future, Online news agency reported on Tuesday.

According to Online, its sources have claimed that MQM will soon break into three groups and each of them would pursue their own political strategy. The news agency reported that one of the groups would stand behind the embattled Altaf Hussain, another would align itself with former dictator General (r) Pervez Musharraf, while the third faction would merge with the MQM-Haqiqi.

Online sources claimed that fissures were caused in the party’s ranks after Altaf Hussain’s recent tirades against the armed forces, and this had also resulted in Altaf Hussain losing grip over party affairs. They added that this was the reason behind Altaf Hussain’s decision to introduce new people in the party’s Rabita Committees in London and Karachi.

“Different groups are vying for influence in Karachi and this is the real reason behind the party’s current woes,” the sources claimed.

The Online report did not contain any official MQM statement on the claims made in the news story.
