VoIP use in Safoora tragedy forces govt to plan counter-strategies: report

KARACHI:

A police investigation report to the Sindh home department stated that the Safoora bus carnage suspects were aware of the hazards of mobile phones, and instead used the voice-over protocol, causing the government to prepare for such challenges in the future.

“The accused persons did not use any mobile SIM for their terrorist activities, they used Talkray, a VoIP software for communication,” said the June 30 report prepared by the police chief and lately submitted to the competent authority.

When officials want the government to invest more in countering the challenges they faced with the emergence of ever-increasing VoIP apps, it is very hard for the authorities to deal with it for both financial and technological deficiencies.

The Sindh government’s proposal to ban internet chat and telephony apps including Skype, WhatsApp, Tango and Viber in 2013 had invited huge criticism from both friends and foes.

It was asked to increase its capacity to counter VoIP-related dangers rather than imposing the ban on the technologies.
